About Us
American Law Institute-American Bar Association Continuing Professional Education
ALI-ABA is the premier national provider of continuing legal education in the United States. Founded in 1947 as a collaborative effort between the American Law Institute (ALI) and the American Bar Association (ABA), ALI-ABA offers a national curriculum of continuing legal education featuring traditional substantive CLE courses, lawyer skills programs, distance learning courses, published books and periodicals, online materials, and in-house services for lawyers at every stage of their careers. More than 10,000 lawyers annually attend ALI-ABA's multi-day courses at various locations throughout the country. Thousands more attend ALI-ABA telephone seminars and webcasts, purchase ALI-ABA books, and access online courses and online materials at the ALI-ABA website.
In addition to its national curriculum of continuing legal education, ALI-ABA is distinguished by its pioneering work over the decades to promote continuing professional education for lawyers among bar associations, law schools, and independent entities through the United States and to create standards to ensure quality and relevancy in continuing legal education programs. Among other things, this work has included invitational conferences and seminal studies on CLE and the legal profession. These conferences, and the consensus statements they produced, have greatly influenced the growth and organization of CLE. Today's robust system of continuing legal education in the United States owes much to these efforts, and ALI-ABA continues to be regarded as a leader by its peers for the unique contributions it has made to the CLE profession.
A governing board of representatives appointed by the ALI and by the ABA oversees the affairs of ALI-ABA. Headquartered in Philadelphia with the ALI, ALI-ABA is staffed by an Executive Director and approximately 85 women and men, including 19 lawyers.

The Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA)
ACLEA is an incorporated, non-profit association with over 600 members representing over 360 providers of continuing legal education. Although most members are located primarily in the United States and Canada, others hail from Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, China, and Mexico. From its founding in 1964, ACLEA has been dedicated to improving the training of lawyers by providing educational conferences and other services for CLE professionals. It's members are not only lawyers and CLE administrators, but also adult education specialists, editors, publishers, marketing and media specialists, business professionals, and in-house educators. The organizations to which they belong to include national, state, local and specialty bar associations, law schools, government agencies, private institutes, legal publishers, law firms, and corporations.
ACLEA's business is overseen by an Executive Committee consisting of a president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, and five directors-at-large. The organization's affairs are conducted by an executive director and staff of two.
